Mir\u00f3, a trustee of the Fundaci\u00f3 Barcelona Ol\u00edmpica, has received this distinction for spreading Olympic values around the world and for his decisive contribution to one of the most significant moments in the city’s contemporary history: the 1992 Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, highlighted that “Pere Mir\u00f3’s professional career has taught us that the values of Olympism and sport are the values of peace”.<\/p>\n
The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, presented the city’s Gold Medal for Sporting Merit at the Sal\u00f3 de Cent to Pere Mir\u00f3 Sellar\u00e9s, member of the Board of Trustees of the Fundaci\u00f3 Barcelona Ol\u00edmpica, for spreading Olympic values around the world and for his decisive contribution to one of the most significant moments in the city’s contemporary history: the 1992 Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
The ceremony was also attended by the Councillor for Sport, David Escud\u00e9; the Regional Minister for Sport, Berni \u00c1lvarez; the President of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), Alejandro Blanco; and the Honorary President of the IOC, Thomas Bach.<\/p>\n
In his address, the Mayor said the award “does absolute justice to the professional career of one of the highest-level sports leaders Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain have ever had”, describing him as the Barcelona native with the greatest responsibility within the IOC after Joan Antoni Samaranch. Collboni also stressed that “Pere Mir\u00f3’s professional career has taught us that the values of Olympism and sport are the values of peace”, recalling that Mir\u00f3 belonged to the generation that embodied what Mayor Maragall called the “council of the 1992 prodigy”.<\/p>\n
Pere Mir\u00f3 Sellar\u00e9s (Manresa, 1955) has built an outstanding career in the service of sport, both locally and at the highest international level. He began as an athlete at Club Nataci\u00f3 Manresa and went on to hold positions of great responsibility within the International Olympic Committee, where he worked for more than thirty years.
\nDuring that time he served as IOC Sports Director, Director of Olympic Solidarity, Director of NOC Relations and, finally, Deputy Director General of the organisation, as well as Special Adviser to President Thomas Bach.<\/p>\n
At the ceremony, Pere Mir\u00f3 expressed his pride at having seen the Olympic Movement become “a unique tool for peace and reconciliation”, capable of transforming individuals, groups, cities, countries and values. He also referred to the IOC’s work with refugee communities, noting that sport has helped bring visibility to their situation and improve their lives.<\/p>\n
This commitment to Barcelona and to the legacy of the 1992 Games continues today through his role on the Board of Trustees of the Fundaci\u00f3 Barcelona Ol\u00edmpica, the institution responsible for preserving and promoting the city’s Olympic legacy and for managing the Joan Antoni Samaranch Olympic and Sports Museum.
