The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) marked its centenary with the launch of the exhibition “100 Years of Athletics Excellence” at Barcelona’s Olympic Museum.

Maite Fandos, Deputy Mayor for Quality of Life, Equality and Sport at Barcelona City Council, had the task of hosting the event, accompanied by Lamine Diack, President of the IAAF. The ceremony was also attended by such sporting dignitaries as José María Odriozola, President of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation, and Joan Villuendas, President of the Catalan Athletics Federation. Other notable guests included Fermíb Cacho, Valentín Massana and Javier Moracho.

“100 Years of Athletics Excellence” featured a remarkable range of striking exhibits from the past 100 years of history, including a replica of the track shoes used by Jesse Owens at the Berlin 1936 Olympics, the originals worn in the 1950s by Emil Zapotek and Fanny Blankers-Koen, and the most modern and sophisticated materials employed by such figures as Usain Bolt.

HRH Prince Albert II of Monaco visited the IAAF centenary exhibition at the Joan Antoni Samaranch Olympic and Sport Museum.

The sporting roll call present at the official delegation of the International Athletics Federation included Javier Sotomayor, Alberto Juantorena, Edwin Moses, Sebastian Coe, Said Aouita, Bob Beamon, Steve Cram, David Rudisha, Pauline Danies and Steve Ovett.
